At the heart of every port visit, there are moments that remind us why the Mission to Seafarers exists.
Last Sunday in Mount Maunganui, a group of visiting seafarers joined the local community for worship at All Saints by the Sea – St Thomas More Catholic Church & School.
After weeks at sea, the men were grateful for a peaceful morning on shore — a time to pray, reflect, and enjoy fellowship together. Standing in front of the church sign, they shared wide smiles and raised thumbs, celebrating not just a photo opportunity, but the joy of belonging.
For many seafarers, faith provides strength during long months away from home. Local churches like St Thomas More offer a warm welcome and a reminder that they are never forgotten. The kindness shown by parishioners, and the sense of being part of a larger family of faith, bring great comfort to those whose lives are spent far from loved ones.
After the service, the group shared stories, laughter, and a meal together — a simple but powerful expression of community. As they prepared to return to their vessel, one seafarer said, “It feels good to be reminded that we have family everywhere we go.”
Moments like this remind us that the Mission to Seafarers Tauranga is more than transport, services, or hospitality — it’s about connection, care, and faith shared across oceans.
A Prayer for Seafarers
Heavenly Father,
Watch over all seafarers as they journey across the seas.
Protect them from danger, loneliness, and fear.
Give them courage in the face of storms and peace in the calm.
Bless their families waiting at home, and surround them with Your love.
May they always find safe harbour, kind hearts, and the light of Your presence wherever they go.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
