At our recent Seafarers Centre Christmas Service, amidst the warmth of candlelight and reflection, we took a special moment to shine a light on one of the most steadfast beacons in our Mission’s story: Peter Butler.
The photo captures a joyful moment as Peter is presented with a gift, but it represents so much more—over twenty-five years of foundational service that helped shape the very community gathered around him.
For those who may not know the full history, the United Seafarers Mission as we know it today wasn’t always a single, vibrant entity. Our past tells of different streams of seafarer ministry—the Galilee Mission, the Mission to Seafarers, the Apostleship of the Sea. For this vital work to grow stronger, these streams needed to converge into one mighty river.
This convergence required vision, diplomacy, and a rock-solid legal foundation. And that is where Peter entered our story.
In 2001, Peter was one of the key architects who painstakingly drafted the constitution that formally created the United Seafarers Mission. He didn’t just write a document; he built the framework that has allowed this ecumenical mission to flourish for over two decades. He gave us our structure, our unity, and our legal soul.
His leadership continued as he served as Chairman of the USM Board, providing wise stewardship and guiding the Mission through its formative years, helping to steer the ship from the bridge.
But the story of Peter Butler at the USM has another, beautiful layer. After helping to found and lead the entire organization, he didn’t retreat to an ivory tower. For the past fourteen years, Peter has been the man with a shopping list.
Every Monday, without fanfare, he has done the shopping for this Centre. He has ensured the fridge is full, the shelves are stocked, and that there is a hot drink or a biscuit ready for a weary seafarer. He moved from the boardroom to the supermarket aisle with the same heart of service.
In the Church, we speak of the ministry of the Word and the ministry of the Table. Peter has mastered both. He crafted the words of our founding document that gave us life, and he has faithfully laid the table, week in and week out, that sustains that life. He is a living example of the “Theology of a Cup of Coffee,” showing us that the highest legal authority and the simplest act of practical kindness are both sacred when offered in Christ’s name.
On behalf of every seafarer who has found a welcoming home here, and every volunteer inspired by his humble dedication, we thank you, Peter.
We thank you for your wisdom, for your leadership, and for every single grocery run. Your more than twenty-five years of service have truly built, sustained, and blessed the United Seafarers Mission.
